I have used WordPerfect for over 15 years and believe that WordPerfect continues to be the superior word processing software on the market.

I know that Microsoft Word is the ubiquitous word processing software, but I think this is due to Microsoft’s successful marketing and licensing strategies rather than because it is the better product.

I have tried and occasionally use MS Word when I receive a document in Word format, but my view is that it cannot compare to WordPerfect, especially when it comes to complex formatting. I have talked with other former WordPerfect users who have been required to switch to Word because of company policy and they have all agreed with this conclusion.

WordPerfect is sold as part of the various WordPerfect Office Suites, which include other applications such as presentations and spreadsheet software. I have not tried the Home Edition, but it appears that it may have fewer features than the Standard Version. A Student and Teacher edition is also available for $83.40.

WordPerfect Office Suites continue to be priced significantly lower than Microsoft’s Office Products.

OpenOffice is an open-source office suite, meaning that it is user-supported, user-developed and FREE.

A couple of years ago, I tried OpenOffice. Writer is the word processing application in this office suite. It appeared to be an adequate word processor, but I concluded that it wasn’t yet powerful enough for my particular needs at the time. However, version 2.0 is now in beta-testing and will probably be significantly better.

For most people, I would suggest that it is definitely worth your time to give this software package a try. It might just save you several hundred dollars. We are currently considering OpenOffice for certain applications at WOL Hungary.
